Liposomal vs. Tablets, Capsules & Powders

If you’ve compared liposomal liquids, tablets, capsules and powders side by side and wondered whether the price difference is actually justified, this page breaks down the real trade-offs of each format — not just the marketing claims.

The short version

Every oral supplement format has to survive digestion before any of it reaches your bloodstream. Tablets, capsules and powders expose the nutrient to stomach acid and digestive enzymes directly. Liposomal liquids wrap the nutrient in a protective phospholipid sphere first. That’s the entire difference — everything below is what it means in practice.

Tablets

How they work: nutrients are compressed with binding agents into a solid form that must fully disintegrate in the stomach before any absorption can begin.

  • Pros: long shelf life, low cost to manufacture, easy to dose precisely, no refrigeration needed.
  • Cons: disintegration time varies a lot by manufacturer and binder quality; poorly made tablets can pass through the digestive system only partially dissolved; the nutrient is fully exposed to stomach acid once released.

Capsules (hard-shell and softgel)

How they work: the shell dissolves faster than a compressed tablet, releasing the nutrient (as a powder or oil) into the stomach.

  • Pros: generally faster-dissolving than tablets, good for nutrients that are easy to encapsulate, still shelf-stable and easy to dose.
  • Cons: once the shell opens, the nutrient is exposed to stomach acid the same way a powder would be — the capsule only controls when release happens, not how well the contents survive digestion afterward.

Powders

How they work: the raw nutrient is mixed with water or another liquid immediately before consumption, with no shell or coating at all.

  • Pros: flexible dosing, often the cheapest format per gram, no binders or fillers required.
  • Cons: fully unprotected through digestion; some nutrients (glutathione is a well-known example) are notably unstable once dissolved and lose potency quickly, both on the shelf and after mixing.

Liposomal liquids

  • Pros: the nutrient is shielded from stomach acid and enzymes during digestion; the phospholipid shell allows more direct delivery into cells; generally better suited to nutrients that are otherwise poorly absorbed or unstable when taken unprotected.
  • Cons: genuinely more complex and expensive to manufacture correctly; shorter shelf life than a dry tablet or capsule; quality varies significantly between brands, since “liposomal” describes a method, not a fixed standard — a poorly made liposomal product with inconsistent particle size won’t outperform a well-made capsule.

So which one should you actually choose?

Honestly: it depends on the nutrient and on you. For nutrients that are inherently stable and already absorb reasonably well in standard form, the practical difference may be modest. For nutrients that are notoriously poorly absorbed or unstable when unprotected — glutathione and curcumin are two commonly cited examples — the delivery method matters more, and liposomal encapsulation has a stronger case. If you have a sensitive digestive system, a liposomal liquid may also be easier to tolerate than a large tablet or capsule, since it bypasses some of the mechanical digestion process — though this varies person to person and isn’t something we can promise as an outcome.
